What are the causes of childhood obesity? What can be done to prevent it? How can parents tell the difference between “baby fat” and a weight problem? What are some schools doing to offer nutritious food for children? America’s Future: Packing on the lbs. answers these questions and more about childhood obesity.
Childhood obesity is a rising problem in the United States. Many children are being treated for health problems associated with being overweight like asthma and high blood pressure. Not only does being obese cause health risks, it also increases social withdrawal and problems with peers.
This documentary explores childhood obesity from several angles: through the eyes of two children who continue to struggle with their weight, a mother’s perspective, a medical professional, a school administrator, and two local advocates for children’s health.
First, Dr. Myles Faith, from the University of Pennsylvania’s Weight Loss and Eating Disorder Clinic, explains childhood obesity in clinical terms. Dr. Faith also gives listeners tips on how to increase daily physical activity which includes the entire family and promotes positive parenting.
Next, listeners are introduced to a family that is struggling with childhood obesity and the effects it has on both children and parents. Cindy and her two daughters, Jessie and Erin, show listeners how weight affects their daily lives as well as the social, emotional, and physical effects of dealing with childhood obesity. Cindy gives a parent’s perspective on dealing with childhood obesity in a sometimes cruel society.
America’s Future: Packing on the lbs. finally turns to Melanie James (a school administrator), Allison Karpyn and Allison Black (from The Food Trust) to inform communities about the affect and obligation schools have to help fight the growing childhood obesity epidemic.
America’s Future: Packing on the lbs. is more than an informational documentary. It reveals the ups and downs children go through when dealing with weight problems and their peers. It also embraces the heartbreak of parents who don’t know where else to turn for help for their children.
America’s Future: Packing on the lbs. gives parents, teachers, and school administrators the knowledge and resources to improve the quality of life for children. After all, they are America’s future.

Steroids are a topic that has gained much attention in the recent past due to the high profile players that are accused of using the substances. Steroids are no longer a whisper or hush topic, but instead a primary focus for anyone who is connected to the sports world.
Steroids: The Silent Epidemic is a documentary that brings the abuse of steroids into a clear reality through the stories of fathers who lost their sons, experts in the field, and an ex-user who is looking to educate teenagers on the truth about steroids.
Taylor Hooton and Frank Marrero begin this documentary with the stories of their sons and the factors behind their decisions that would eventually lead to their death. After some eye opening stories, ex-user Jeff Rutstein and Rowan University head trainer Chuck Wheeden explain the results of steroids as well as the most popular reasons for taking them.
The documentary also includes Kay Hawes from the Office of Drug Free Sport, one of the most popular private organizations that tests for steroids on both the college and minor league levels; Fernando Mendez, the Executive Director of the Taylor Hooton Foundation, who uses his 13 plus years in Major League Baseball as a conditioning coach to now fight steroid abuse; and finally Dr. Gary Wadler from New York University. Wadler has appeared in front of Congress concerning the steroid issue and is considering one of the top doctors in the area.
Finally, the documentary looks at organizations that are hoping to stem the rise in steroids and keep kids clean throughout their younger years. These organizations take us through some ideas about how to educate people as well as keep them aware of the growing steroids problem that our nation is facing.
